The Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most celebrated holidays on the planet.
Nearly 1/6th of the world’s population celebrates it including China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, and many local Chinatowns across the planet. The actual date of the Lunar New Year changes year over year as it is based on the lunar calendar. This year celebrations kick off on Friday, February 16th and lasts for 15 days.
While traditions vary from country to country, similar themes of bringing in “good luck” for the upcoming year exist in all cultures. Here are some easy customs for your home to follow to ensure your luckiest year yet!
DO:
Clean before New Years Day
Doing a full clean of every nook and cranny in your home prior to the holiday is a way of “sweeping” the bad luck from the previous year and readying your home for a fresh start.
DON’T:
Clean ON New Years Day
Doing any sort of cleaning, including sweeping or throwing out trash, is considered taboo for the first day of Lunar New Year. Many believe this symbolizes throwing your savings and valuables away.
DO:
Buy new clothes and items for your home!
Purchasing new items is representative of welcoming new things and getting ready for a fresh start to the New Year! Not that we ever need an excuse to go shopping!
DON’T:
Wash your clothes or hair
Doing so in the first couple of days of New Years will wash away your fortunes for the upcoming year.
DO:
Celebrate the Spring Festival with your loved ones
A reunion dinner, typically done on New Year’s Eve, gathers loved ones for a big feast to commemorate the past year.
DON’T:
Break anything during holidays.
In Western culture breaking a mirror means 7 years of bad luck. In Asian culture, breaking anything (including bowls, plates, cases, etc.) symbolizes money loss or family discord for the upcoming year.
