Edmonton, AB – Despite the brisk weather on May 15, 2014, the atmosphere was very warm as friendly faces met their future neighbours for the first time at Rohit Communities’ Tawa Landing Grand Opening. The First Place Program community saw more than fifty attendees including city councillors and representatives, customers and Rohit team members. Two furnished show homes were on display as future home owners were given the opportunity to see the floor plans they had purchased come to life.
Rohit Communities was honoured to have Councillors Ed Gibbons and Amarjeet Sohi join city representatives in participating in this community event. The Councillors cut the ribbon in front of a crowd of homeowners and Rohit employees during the event.
Rohit Communities and Landmark Group were the selected builders in the First Place Program partnership with the City of Edmonton. It is a unique program designed to support first time buyers in Alberta by transforming unused school sites into new homes with the benefit of revitalizing mature neighbourhoods. This program not only helps people get into their first homes, but also benefits the overall community by refreshing existing neighbourhoods by adding young families, new housing types, and utilizing under used infrastructure. The program also contributes to the city’s objective of having twenty five percent of new housing developments in mature neighbourhoods.
Councillor Ed Gibbons acknowledges the impact of the First Place Program in a small speech before the ribbon cutting ceremony. “The fact is that Edmonton is growing at a tremendous pace, and if we don’t talk about it and act on it, we’re not doing our jobs […] Not everybody can afford to go into high-rises going up, so how do we actually come to the method of dealing with the housing issue? This is one fantastic method.”
It was particularly exciting for families to see the blossoming neighbourhood as the project sold out well before show homes were ready. Many of the Tawa Landing Families had made their decisions based solely on floor plans and the desirable location that offered public services and amenities with nearby proximity to school and work.
One of the homebuyers, Kathryn, shares what the First Place Program has done for her. “I have a sense of independence and accomplishment from owning my first home! It feels like my daughter and I have really made it – that we are able to get our own house – it is a big sense of accomplishment for me.”
Rohit Communities is currently selling into their next First Place Program development called Casselman Landing in North East Edmonton with townhomes starting from the $240’s while Landmark Group is underway with selling their Caernarvon Keep neighbourhood.
